Plans for a new supermarket in Castlemaine have taken another step with the application on display through the Mount Alexander Shire.
The new development includes building a new supermarket, two shops and a car park on at the former gasworks site at Forest, Duke and Urquhart streets in Castlemaine.
Plans show the supermarket - which will be a Woolworths - will be 3400 square metres with a 200 square metre bottle shop and an additional 192 square metre shop.
Mount Alexander Shire Council manager of development services Shannon Meadows said the applications and plans have been revised to allow for 108 onsite parking spaces at ground level, in addition to 62 on-street car parking within Urquhart Street.
"The planning permit application was first received in July 2019 proposing a 3400m2 supermarket, shops and underground carpark," said Mr Meadows.
A Woolworths spokesperson said the organisation was excited to bring a new neighbourhood shopping centre to Castlemaine.
"If approved, local residents will soon have access to one of Australia's most modern supermarkets," the spokesperson said.
"The proposal would bring significant employment opportunities and economic growth to the Castlemaine area."
Proposed works will including improvements to Urquhart Street and access works on Forest Street.
Sixty-two on-street car parks, street landscaping and improved pedestrian access will also be undertaken.
The Lascorp Development Group's application also includes intentions to use the land to sell packaged liquor, remove a native tree and alter access in a Road Zone Category 1.
The development's plans were originally approved in 2018 before amended plans were approved last year.
In 2017, an independent planning panel recommended the land be re-zoned.
Council staff will assess the planning permit under the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme and make a recommendation after all information has been received and assessed.
A decision on the application will not be made before October 9.
Shire residents can view the plans and make an objection or submission through the Mont Alexander Shire Website or in writing to Mount Alexander Shire Council, PO Box 185, Castlemaine VIC 3450.
