Following approval from Heritage Victoria, the works will take eight weeks to complete.
Council's property services manager Daniella McClure said the project will involve the removal of the fountain's upper bowl by crane, to rectify internal leaks and prevent damage to the landmark.

"The Alexandra Fountain is an important part of the city's history and its future and it is important to maintain it in good working order," Ms McClure said.
The fountain is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, the Register of the National Estate and is classified by the National Trust of Australia.
Major refurbishment of the fountain took place in 2017, which included restoration of its cast balustrade and masonry, repairs and painting of the statutes and render, plumbing and electric upgrades.
The fountain was designed by local architect William Vahland and funded from the proceeds of the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, a gift from philanthropist George Lansell and funds from the former Sandhurst City Council.
The maintenance works will commence on Friday.
