The university came in at 234th in the 2021 Times Higher Education World Rankings after being ranked 291st last year.
Only two other Victorian universities - the University of Melbourne and Monash University - placed higher.
The latest recognition came after the university placed fourth in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for overall contribution to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

"This latest outstanding achievement in the world rankings further acknowledges La Trobe's deeply embedded focus on addressing the world's biggest challenges," La Trobe Acting Vice-Chancellor Susan Dodds said.
"We have achieved this through our exceptional teaching, research, and our longstanding industry connections at a regional, national, and global level."
Times Higher Education calculates its rankings on information provided by more than 1500 research-intensive universities and institutions across the world.
Universities are assessed for research, citations, teaching, international outlook, and industry income.
La Trobe has risen 158 places in the rankings since 2017.
