PayStay allows users to pay for their parking online or via a smartphone app and will be available throughout most of the city centre.
The only exceptions will be for the Edwards Street and Hargreaves Street multi-storey car parks.
More news:
The council's manager of safe and healthy environments Caroline Grylls said people did not carry as much loose change as they did in the past.
"Many prefer the convenience of paying by card," she said.
"Users of the PayStay system can register multiple vehicles to one account and for a small reminder service fee people can opt to have SMS reminders sent to remind them when their parking session is due to expire.
"PayStay also has SMS and phone payment options and accepts Mastercard and Visa. However, people can still purchase parking tickets using cash or their credit and debit cards."
The council trialed the technology at its in Market and Myers Street car parks.
The PayStay app is available to download from the App Store or Google play.
