The measure save police waiting for a toxicology report before issuing an infringement notice and licence suspension.
Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said this change would get drug drivers off the roads quicker.
The driving ban applying to drivers caught with drugs in their system will also be increased, to a minimum of 12 hours and up to 24 hours.
OTHER NEWS:
Ms Murphy said the previous system created a risk that the offending driver would continue to drive with drugs in their system.
Drivers who receive the roadside infringement will still be required to take a Preliminary Oral Fluid Test and an Oral Fluid Test.
If these two tests return a positive result for drugs, and infringement will be issued and driving ban imposed.
Drivers still have the option of challenging the infringement through the court system.
Ms Murphy said Victoria Police hoped the new system would be smoother and more efficient, helping to remove drug drivers from the roads.
