TWO horses involved in this morning's crash appear to have minimal injuries, the Bendigo police station's Fleur Coutanche said.
She said a woman was driving to work when she hit the horses in the heavily wooded area, close to a bend.
"It was so dark that there was no way she would have seen them," Senior Constable Coutanche said.
More news
She said the horses got loose from a nearby property.
The owner has returned to the property to see if they can discover how they escaped, given that all gates are closed every night, Senior Constable Coutanche.
Vets euthanised one horse at the scene of the crash.
Earlier
One horse has been euthanised after a crash in Epsom early this morning.
Police believe three horses were involved in the crash, though they are yet to establish whether the animals had broken free from a paddock.
Officers believe a small hatchback hit the horses at approximately 6am on Howard Street.
Both lanes of the road remain open and the euthanised horse is in bushland beside the road.
Another horse is understood to be close by.
The horses' owner has just arrived at the scene.
The car has been towed.
More to come.
