FOR only the second time in its history the Bendigo District Cricket Association will play a season of solely one-day games.
Due to the uncertainty around the impact COVID-19 could have on its season - and it's being felt already with the BDCA not yet able to lock in its target start date of October 31 as definitive - 2020-21 will comprise one-day games only.
According to BDCA historian Darren Rodda, the only other time in the competition's history when a season was purely one-day games was 1942-43 during World War 2, with that premiership won by Bendigo.
So with the BDCA to be in full-on one-day mode in 2020-21, which teams have been the best performed in the coloured clothing in recent years?
Looking back over the past seven seasons, all clubs have played either 25 or 26 completed home and away one-day games (more have been fixtured, but have been weather-affected draws).
Not surprisingly given its decade of dominance in the BDCA, reigning Keck-Findlay Shield premiers Strathdale-Maristians have been the one-day leaders over the past seven seasons with 18 wins.
However, Golden Square has performed equally as strongly as the Suns in the one-day format, also with 18 victories through the timeframe.
There is then a gap to the rest of the competition, with the remaining eight clubs all having between 10 and 13 one-day victories over the past seven years.
While the traditionalists may be disappointed to see the two-day format in hiatus, an all-one day competition shapes as an exciting concept given its propensity to have more unpredictability.
The chances of upsets in a shortened format of the game are far greater than those of a two-day where there's more time for the gaps in standards between teams to be exposed.
The BDCA's proposed fixture concept of 18 one-day rounds where all teams play each other twice - once at home and once away - is obviously more equitable than the 9/4 fixture we've become accustomed to of teams facing four opponents twice and five once.
Unlike two-day games where the weather conditions could vary significantly from week one to week two, the one-day games allows for far greater parity.
And who knows - could the one-day format help clubs with numbers and perhaps bring a few past players back to the game given they won't have to commit over two days or spend 85 overs out in the field?
One player who won't be part of the action is the BDCA batsman who has been the most dominant in the one-day form over the past seven seasons - Ben Gunn, who has signed to play with Laanecoorie Dunolly in the Maryborough District competition.
Since 2013-14 there have been 21 one-day centuries made in the BDCA: Gunn has six of them - five with Bendigo United and one at Golden Square.
Meanwhile, in another structure change a new 2020-21 three-week finals series has been confirmed that gives the top two teams a double chance:
WEEK 1: Qualifying final: 1 v 2 (winner into the grand final). Elimination final: 3 v 4 (loser out).
WEEK 2: Preliminary final: Qualifying final loser v elimination final winner.
WEEK 3: Grand final: Qualifying final winner v preliminary final winner.
