Sedgwick animal rescuer Matthew Glascott has begun a crowdfunding campaign for Ginny, who arrived at his farm three years ago 100kg overweight.
"We've taken 60kg off of her since she first got here. Back when she arrived she was basically a blob on legs," he said.
More news:
Ginny was bred in Queensland before being sold as a pet, though she has since had multiple owners including who fattened her up to eat.
They could not bring themselves to kill her. Ginny's last owner Ginny was eventually dropped her off at Mr Glascott's farm.
He has already organised two surgeries for Ginny, including one in which vets removed two kilograms of fat from around her eyes.
Surgeons then gave her an "ear tuck" that was supposed to pull her ears and the excess skin near her eyes back.
The operation allowed her to see for the first time in years and dramatically changed her quality of life, Mr Glascott said.
Sadly, two weeks after surgery the stitches gave way. Ginny's incisions had not been able to fuse in so short a time.
Vets are now planning new operations they believe will permanently fix the problem, but it will come on top of the $5000 Mr Glascott has already paid for past procedures.
"We rarely ask for help from the public but we cannot do this on our own. If you are able to help it would be greatly appreciated," he said.
The new surgeries will cost $500 per ear, likely done separately because Ginny's weight issues would limit the time she could stay under anaesthetic.
Mr Glascott does not know how many years Ginny has left as he cannot be sure of her age, but says the sun-baking enthusiast has been very happy since arriving at the farm.
"She is not in pain and always is the first to put her head in the trough at feeding time," he said.
Ginny has been able to compensate for her blindness with other senses including incredible powers of smell.
"I'm out in the top corner of the paddock right now and she is in the bottom corner. She knows I'm here though and if I drop food here it will only take her five minutes to come up," Mr Glascott said.
