Mount Alexander Shire director infrastructure and development Jess Howard said more than 800 vehicles use the road each day.

Access from Hawkins Road will be maintained during construction with works planned to minimise the impact on traffic.
"The bridges are at the end of their useful life and will be replaced with modern structures that comply with today's standards," Ms Howard said.
The bridge on Eagles Road in Harcourt will be replaced to provide safer access for pedestrians and motorists. Works are expected to begin in September with a detour to be used.
A pedestrian footpath will be added on the eastern side of the new bridge.
"This project will see a new bridge constructed that not only meets current standards, but will be considerably safer for road users and the local community," Ms Howard said.

"We will also extend the guardrails and place crash terminals at the end to reduce the likelihood of vehicles entering the creek."
Each of the bridges have currently have a 20 tonne weight limit with their replacements built to last between 80 and 100 years.
"Once we've completed the works the current 20 tonne load limit will be removed to ensure safe access for heavy vehicles including firefighting and emergency vehicles," Ms Howard said.
