BEARS Lagoon-Serpentine veteran Nathan McNally has edged out a host of fellow on-ballers to top the Addy's Loddon Valley league player rankings since 2012.
The Addy's player rankings use a system based on the weekly six best players submitted by clubs, with a weighting given towards contributions made to a winning team (similar to the starting point for umpires in casting votes post-match) that produce a ranking total.
The points system:
Winning team - 1st best (16.0 points); 2nd best (13.5); 3rd best (11.0); 4th best (8.5); 5th best (6.0); 6th best (3.5).
Losing team - 1st best (7.0); 2nd best (6.0); 3rd best (5.0); 4th best (4.0); 5th best (3.0); 6th best (2.0).
Drawn game (both teams) - 1st best (10.0); 2nd best (8.5); 3rd best (7.0); 4th best (5.5); 5th best (4.0); 6th best (2.5).
In short, the rankings aim to reflect performing consistently, contributions to a winning team and longevity, with McNally taking out the No.1 spot with 559.0 points.
Throughout the timespan, McNally - who would have played at St Arnaud this year had the season not been cancelled - featured among the Bears' best players in 71 games, including 39 where he was rated among their top three performers.
"Nathan is probably the hardest trainer I've seen... what you see on a Saturday with the way he plays is also the way he trains," Bears coach Greg Gadsden said this week.
"He's flat out the whole time and nothing is done in halves. He's a quiet sort of a bloke, but he leads by example.
"He's so hard at the footy and is a real workhorse in the way he goes about it. He has a sensational work ethic and has been a fantastic player for a long time for the club."
McNally won the Loddon Valley league's Harding Medal in 2006 and also has a cabinet full of Bears' best and fairests.
"He's won five best and fairests for the club, runner-up a couple of time and a league medallist - it speaks for itself," Gadsden said.
McNally is one of five players in the top 10 who have won the Harding Medal, along with No.2 Zeb Broadbent (2016), No.4 Terry Reeves (2019), No.8 Chris Down (2018) and No.10 Corey Gregg (2012).
Bridgewater on-baller Broadbent took out the No.2 slot with 542.5 points and twice topped the season rankings in his Harding Medal year of 2016 (207.5 points) and 2014 (148.0).
Broadbent is one of 12 Bridgewater players in the top 50, with the Mean Machine - who have won 111 of 142 games and five flags during the timespan - having the most of any club.
Maiden Gully YCW's Nick Waterson (539.0), who was to play with Sandhurst this year, Mitiamo's Reeves (533.5), who made the move to Golden Square this year, and retired former Newbridge coach Brad Comer (518.5) round out the top five.
Like McNally, the Eagles' Waterson has also played 71 games where he has been in his team's best players - the equal most in the competition since 2012.
