Herbert shot a one-under par 69 in the third round to move six places up the leaderboard into a tie for 56th with one day remaining.
The Neangar Park product started his third round on the 10th and, after making par on his first two holes, had a double bogey on the 12th.
Herbert's drive went right and into the water on the testing par-four and then he missed a two-metre putt for bogey.
Pleasingly for Herbert, the 12th was to be his only blemish for the round.
He bounced straight back with a birdie on the par-four 13th. His drive found the fairway bunker, but he produced a brilliant second shot to hit the ball within three-and-a-half metres of the pin. He calmly slotted the putt.
Birdie opportunities on the 14th and 15th slid past the hole before he birdied the par-five 16th hole to get back to even-par for the day.
A brilliant bunker shot from next to the green helped Herbert save par on the 17th, which is rated the hardest hole on the course.
The 18th is ranked the second-hardest hole on the course, but Herbert made light work of it by hitting his approach shot to within three metres and then holing the birdie putt.
Herbert's second nine - holes one to nine - resulted in nine-straight pars.
He missed a good birdie opportunity on the first, before holing a great par-saving putt on the second.
Herbert continued his fine bunker play on the third hole when he blasted his fourth shot on the par-five to within one metre of the pin and saved par.

After a birdie putt narrowly missed on the par-three fourth, Herbert overcame a wayward drive on the fifth to scramble a par.
Solid golf from the sixth to the eighth produced three-straight pars, before his short game saved him from a bogey on the ninth.
With one round remaining on Monday morning (AEST), Herbert is three-over par for the tournament - two shots in front of world number one Jon Rahm. American Brendon Todd leads the event at 12-under par.
Jason Day is the leading Australian at six-under par.
Herbert will play alongside American Michael Thompson for the second day in succession.
In his first competitive event since early March, Herbert's performance this week is a great warm-up for next week's opening major of the 2020 season, the US PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco.
