Leading Senior Constable Wayne Rowe said the driver crashed the white Mistubishi ASX on the Calder Freeway at about 9pm.
The driver left the scene before police arrived. Police later found the car had been stolen from Werribee.
"The crash was about one kilometre from the Ravenswood (petrol station)," Leading Senior Constable Rowe said.
"It has run into a wire barrier and caused extensive damage.
"One lane of traffic was closed for about 45 minutes, while police investigated and tried to locate the driver."
Police are hoping someone may have seen the car driving in the area before it crashed.
