Mat Christie, Luke Baird, Max Grant, Connor Miller and Riley Hocking all play cricket for Golden Square and decided to take on the challenge to raise funds for the Dry July Foundation's annual grants program.

"(On Friday) night we ticked over $5000 which was good," Mr Christie said. "It is the first time we have done it but we thought it was worth doing. A few of us do Movember each year as well.

"It was to raise money for cancer but also a lot of people deal with mental health and drinking, so we are raising awareness for that as well."

Originally, the team hoped to raise $250 each but Mr Christie said the generosity people saw them eclipse their target.

"We didn't expect to get to $5000, we thought about $250 each," he said. "But there was a lot of generosity from mates, different companies and work colleagues.

"A couple of the boys both have mums who have suffered from cancer and we all know a few people suffered from cancer as well. We did it in honour for them and helping support a lot of people too."

Mr Christie said it was a a bit of a challenge to go 30 days without a beer.

"Usually I am a drink on a Friday night, Saturday type of guy," he said. "It was definitely hard on Fridays after knocking of work and turning the footy on. I have also been up the river a couple times around the camp fire, whihc was hrd with a soft drink.

"But it is definitely well worth it. It's a worthy cause to raise awareness cancer and other health issues."
