In response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Bendigo in recent days and the closure of schools in the region, AFLCV has postponed all football and netball matches and training sessions until further notice.
The Bendigo Junior Football League and Bendigo Football Netball League under-18 matches scheduled for this weekend will not go ahead.
"As precautionary measure due to the reported recent spike in positive COVID-19 cases detected in the Greater Bendigo region, AFL Central Victoria have announced the postponement of all scheduled football and netball training sessions and matches until further notice, effective immediately,'' an AFLCV statement said.
"We thank everyone associated for your understanding and patience during these difficult circumstances. AFL Central Victoria in conjunction with all affiliated leagues will continue to be responsive, flexible, and diligent as we assess the evolving situation daily, with the health and wellbeing of our community at the forefront of all necessary measures implemented.
"Further announcements regarding training and competition will be made in due course, dependent on relevant health advice."
"We've always said the health and safety of our community is the most important thing,'' AFLCV regional general manager Carol Cathcart said.
"At this point in time, with what we do know in the community, we need to err on the side of caution and let the situation pan out. Once we have more information we'll have another look at it.
"Everyone has worked very hard to get the season underway, but at the same time we're mindful we do need to do the right thing and do what is going to be right for the community to ensure the virus is not spread around.
The decision to postpone junior footy and netball in the region comes on top of the news all Victorians will be required to wear a face covering when they leave home from Sunday night as Premier Daniel Andrews announced a record 723 new COVID-19 cases and 13 deaths on Thursday.
