The Victorian government said the $10 million works would focus on corridors across the metropolitan and regional lines where there was a history of safety, trespassing, or vandalism incidents, as well as animal strikes.

About 85 kilometres of fencing would be installed along the Bendigo and Ballarat regional lines as part of the project.

"These new fences will reduce damage to rail infrastructure and prevent delays to our train network - but above all, these important safety upgrades will save lives," Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said.

The new fencing is part of the Victorian Government's $328.4 million investment in critical public transport and road maintenance upgrades.

The project is expected to create or support more than 600 jobs across the state.

The state government is also partnering with Lifeline Australia and TrackSAFE to support the Pause. Call. Be Heard campaign.

The campaign allows public transport passengers to receive geo-targeted messaging about Lifeline's services as they scroll through their social media feeds.
