The aged care centre in Golden Square confirmed the positive test on Friday in a letter to families.

The centre asked residents' families and friends to avoid the home while contact tracing and cleaning took place.

Mercy Health Bethlehem manager Rose Tunious said there had been no further positive coronavirus tests among staff or residents.

"Since the positive test result, the home has been in lockdown, which means we can't allow any visitors into the home," Ms Tunious said.

"We will be constantly checking up on our residents' emotional needs while no visitors are allowed, and residents and their families will receive frequent pastoral care support.

"We will do our very best to keep our residents in contact with loved ones via other communication channels.

"Medical appointments will be via telehealth when possible and we are also increasing the frequency of medical check-ups so that we can identify the onset of any early signs of illness."

Ms Tunious said the centre underwent a deep clean after the positive COVID-19 test.

She said the 119 residents would remain in their rooms until it was considered safe to return to regular movement around the home.

"We will maintain a strict, frequent cleaning regime using chemicals as prescribed by the Department of Health and Human Services," Ms Tunious said.

"All staff will wear masks, goggles, and the appropriate personal protective equipment for the task they are undertaking. The home has full access to all levels of PPE."

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Saturday said aged care facilities were driving the number of COVID-19 infections.

As a result, the Victorian government introduced a range of new measures including restricting visitors and ramping up free testing for aged care workers.
