Morrissey, a Bendigo artist, will showcase her work in the Exhibit B space in the Bendigo Bank Central Building from July 24.

She said the show idea came after visiting the Nara Dreaming exhibition in Lockwood.

"It features a lot of First Nations artists and I went a couple of years ago. It included a session where you met dingoes and saw the exhibition as well," Morrissey said.

"I was there with my best friend's family and saw this painting of an emu. My friend's father said he loved the look on its face and I thought I might like to paint some emus myself. I'm not a First Nations artists but it got me inspired.

"Emus are important to First Nations culture in their astrological mythology, constellations and other creation stories and are the inspiration behind some of their dances."

After completing a number of works last year, Morrissey came across the opportunity to exhibit them.

"I worked on them all last year," she said. "When the opportunity for an exhibition came up, I thought I had a good body of work."

Morrissey graduated with honours in visual arts from La Trobe university in 2000 and has been creating ever since.

"It's something I was always good at in school," she said. "My art teachers liked and encouraged me, so by the time I got to VCE, I studied art in years 11 and 12.

"(When) I heard heard from an art lecturer about course, I fell in love with it and knew it was what I always wanted to study. Since then I have exhibited through Victoria and NSW in different galleries and worked as an art teacher though country Victoria as far as Sunbury, Kyneton, Woodend and Maryborough."

In her career, Morrissey said there had always been spaces for local artists to exhibit.

"We do have some good spaces," she said. "You just have to be on the look out on where find a lot places and spaces."
