However, after the latest spike in COVID-19 cases across metropolitan Melbourne, Rugby Victoria has again postponed the start of the Championship Reserves, and at this stage it looks unlikely it will happen.
Miners coach Steve Dockrey said the club was holding a meeting on Thursday night to discuss the 2020 season with the players.
"Some notification came through from Rugby Victoria that due to the further increase in cases and the restrictions imposed on areas of Melbourne, that it was more than probable there won't be a competition this year," Dockrey said.
The Championship Reserves division has teams from across the state including Geelong, Shepparton, Melton and Eltham, most of which are within restricted areas.
There is also the chance of a regional-only competition, which is also up in the air after slight increases across regional areas.
"We will be talking to the players on Thursday to see if they are happy to continue training once per week for the time being, mainly so they can stay connected with each other," Dockrey said.
Fighting Miners senior leadership player Ryan Spedding said it had been a challenging period with so much uncertainty in recent months.
"It's hard for us to see the season postponed again," he said.
"Our training sessions have also been non-contact, so we are working hard to keep the sessions interesting and fun with skill-based games with some other fitness activities."
Community rugby across the state was also due to return to full-contact training this week, which has also been postponed indefinitely.
RV released a statement last week for the broader rugby community in relation to the recent spike in cases.
"There was overwhelming support from our club leaders to facilitate a community rugby season during the spring period," RV said in a statement.
"RV will undertake further scoping work over the next two weeks and will present a number of models and scenarios to clubs for their consideration.
"RV is working closely with our regional clubs to facilitate a regional club competition which can go ahead for juniors and seniors and we will announce further information over the coming weeks.
"The season will look different and feel different however together, RV and our clubs are committed to providing our community with the opportunity to play rugby in 2020.
"RV will continue to follow the advice of the State Government and Health Department. We look forward to sharing further updates with you over the coming weeks.
"Stay safe, stay positive, stay home and stay connected."
Meanwhile, the Miners' community has been reliving some of the club's past glories on social media, including a flashback to the club's sixth premiership in 1997.
