Precious letters and postcards dating from World War One were taken from a filing cabinet, as well as other items like vinyl records.
Police believe the burglary occurred on Waller Avenue in February this year.
The resident, who asked not to be identified, said a relative had asked to see the documents, which include discharge documents, licences, letters from the Ballarat RSL, and hand-written letters from the soldiers to their family sent while serving in France.
"I went to get them the next morning, they weren't there, the postcards and all were gone, everything from the war days," he said.
"Whoever was in here, they took all the postcards, things from the Red Cross, those things that had notes that were posted to soldiers in the trenches.
"I can see where the filing cabinet's been pried open - I don't know what value they'd be to anybody.
"I don't understand why anyone would do that, it leaves a dirty taste in your mouth."
IN THE NEWS:
Police note the documents may include the names Allan Orr and George Williams, and Beatles records are among the vinyl missing.
In a post on Ballarat Eyewatch, police said the smallest amount of information could help with the investigation.
