WHAT was going to be a reduced VFL season has now been abandoned for this year.
AFL Victoria announced on Wednesday the cancellation of the 2020 season following the re-entering of stage three restrictions in Melbourne.
While the VFL season has been abandoned, AFL Victoria is still hopeful of holding a VFLW Super Series for non-AFLW listed players in September.
AFL head of talent and state league competitions Tristan Salter said the decision to call off the VFL season was made following consultation with all VFL clubs and, after multiple scenarios were considered, the timings made it difficult to conduct the competition.
"All levels of the game across Victoria have been impacted by the health pandemic this year and the second wave of restrictions has made it difficult to conduct a fair and equitable season while preserving the integrity of the VFL competition," Salter said.
The season was to start August 1 with seven teams.
