Saturday's figures were the second-highest daily number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began in March.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the government would lock down two additional Melbourne postcodes in an attempt to stop the spread of the crisis.
There are now 12 postcodes in the metro area that are on tightened restrictions.
Nine public housing blocks are also being locked down for at least five days for COVID-19 testing, affecting 3000 Victorians.
"These (case) numbers are a very real concern to all of us," Mr Andrews said.
"These additional postcodes that are added... will cause pain but the pain it causes, the frustration or difficulty that it causes is nowhere near the difficulties that will be experienced if we have this get away from us."
It comes as COVID-19 case numbers remain steady in the central Victorian region.
The total number of confirmed cases for Greater Bendigo remains at 10, with one active case in the local government area.
That case is the only active case in central Victoria.
Meanwhile, Macedon Ranges has recorded a total of nine cases since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Mount Alexander shire has had six confirmed cases.
Campaspe shire has had five confirmed cases.
Loddon shire has had three confirmed cases.
Gannawarra shire has had two confirmed cases.
Central Goldfields shire has had one confirmed case.
The Department of Health and Human Services classifies cases by local government area based on the residential address provided when the case was notified.
That address is not necessarily where the case currently resides or where the person was infected.
Cases are considered 'active' when someone has tested positive, is in isolation, has yet to recover and is being monitored by the department.
