The Bloods recovered from an eight-point deficit in time-on of the last quarter to produce a gutsy 17-point victory, 13.7 (85) to 9.14 (68) at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
The victory in the top-of-theladder clash was South Bendigo's 10th in a row, while it ended Golden Square's 20-game winning streak.
It was Golden Square's first defeat since it lost to South Bendigo by 29 points at the QEO in round 11, 2009.
Among Golden Square's 20-consecutive victories had been an 86-point win over South Bendigo in round one in the grand final rematch, but this time the Bloods came to play.
"It's only a home and away game, and we're very aware of that, but it's nice to know we can beat them,'' Bloods coach Rick Coburn said.
"It was a fairly topsy-turvy game, but the way the boys were able to find another gear in the last five minutes was a really good sign.''
Golden Square coach Nick Carter said South Bendigo's relentless pressure for four quarters didn't allow his side to play at the level required to beat opposition of the Bloods' quality.
"We needed to play our best footy and we didn't,'' Carter said.
"We had our opportunities to put some scoreboard pressure on, but we didn't. South Bendigo was very good and we weren't and they deserved their win.''
The Bulldogs were up by eight points with 3:50 left on the clock, but the Bloods wouldn't lie down though, with their revival starting with a 50m set-shot goal from Jackson Ireland that cut the margin to under a kick with 3:03 left to play.
From the following centre bounce, the Bloods kicked the ball long to a contest in the South Bendigo forward line.
The ball spilled to ground and the Bloods' Daniel Anderson charged through to swoop on it and goal on the run from 40m out.
Anderson's goal gave the Bloods a four-point lead with 2:41 left.
A minute later Bloods wingman Shaun Bergin sealed Golden Square's fate when he marked 40m out and calmly slotted his set-shot at the Barnard Street end straight through.
With Bergin's third goal securing the Bloods a memorable victory, veteran Danny O'Bree added the icing on the cake by capping his brilliant second half by snapping his third goal from 40m to make the final margin 17 points.
The Bloods' defence led by Brad Wright - who held Grant Weeks to four goals - Leigh Rees, Phil Carroll, Tom Hams, Daniel Frew and Daniel Nalder was brilliant.
The best players for the Bulldogs were led by half-back flankers Michael Bateman and Chris Malone, gun midfielders Simon Rosa and Mark Lloyd and wingman Adam Baird.

KANGAROO FLAT v GISBORNE
Kangaroo Flat bounced back from a four-goal quarter-time deficit to beat Gisborne by 39 points at Dower Park.
Sparked by speedy, hard-running midfielders Brenton McKenry, Shannon Geary and Ash Benbow, the Roos kicked 15 goals to the Bulldogs' six after quarter-time.
Spearhead Justin Maddern booted seven goals and Geary three in Kangaroo Flat's 18.17 (125) to 13.8 (86) victory.
"They jumped us and got their hands on the ball first in that opening quarter... we got first hands on the ball in the second. It was as simple as that," Roos coach Murray Collins said.
"Our forwards in Maddern and Geary played well and converted. Down back defenders such as Jack Bowyer, who did a good job on Tom May, were solid."
Gisborne coach Ty Elliott said young teams - like his - often found it difficult to sustain concentrated efforts for four quarters.
"Today after quarter-time we might have got a little bit ahead of ourselves about how we were going,'' Elliott said.
"We started to become a little bit individualised and at the moment we're not a group that can rely on individual-based footy.''

KYNETON v CASTLEMAINE
There's a saying that "a week is a long time in football''.
And for Bendigo Football League club Kyneton, that saying couldn't have rung truer in round 11.
A week after kicking just one goal and losing to South Bendigo by 199 points, the Tigers bounced back on Saturday to defeat Castlemaine by 25 points.
The Tigers won 15.20 (110) to 12.13 (85) at the Kyneton Showgrounds to end their nine-game losing streak.
There was no one more proud of the Tigers than president Travis Law.
"The boys had a talk between themselves after last week and today they just had a go,'' Law said.
"Both sides really wanted to win, but we were just a bit luckier on the day.
"We had a few things go our way and got the win.''
In a desperate last quarter between two sides that had won just one of 20 games between them this year, it was the Tigers that took
control, kicking 5.3 to 1.2 to secure the win that is now likely to ensure the club avoids a third-consecutive wooden spoon.
In his return from a hamstring injury, star Tigers forward James Condos kicked four goals, while Wayne Foster also chipped in with four.
The best players for the Tigers were led by midfielder Rob Trajkovski, 17-year-old Michael Clancy (two goals), fellow teenager Shane Page and Beau Hopkins.
The best players for the Magpies were consistent big man Luke Walters, Joel Smith (three goals), Jeff McMurtrie and Paul Chaplin.

MARYBOROUGH v SANDHURST
Sandhurst overcame a determined Maryborough by 15 points at Princes Park.
The Dragons looed set for a big win when they kicked five of the first six goals of the game.
However, the Pies responded by kicking the final three goals of the second term to edge within one kick at the main break.
That momentum continued early in the third quarter when the Pies kicked three straight goals to lead by 13 points.
It was the Dragons' turn to fight back and they kicked six of the next seven goals to grab a handy 15-point lead at the last change.
The final quarter was an arm wrestle with both sides adding 2.2.
Dragons coach Keiran Niill said his players had been challenged many times in the match.
"Maryborough is a good team and well coached,'' Nihill said.
"We really had to fight for the win, especially when Maryborough got a couple of goals up in the third quarter.
"Today we showed we are maturing as a team."
There were many highs for the Hurst, none more so than the play of full-back Mal Borchard, who kept Matt Brown to a goal.

STRATHFIELDSAYE v EAGLEHAWK
A dozen goals by full-forward Matt Gretgrix lifted Eaglehawk to a 71-point victory over Strathfieldsaye.
The Hawks led by just three goals as the final quarter began.
In a remarkable finish to the contest, Eaglehawk slammed on 8.10 to 1.1 to win 20.20 (140) to 10.9 (69).
Gretgrix capitalised on the play of a Borough midfield and on-ball brigade led by the likes of Troy Coates, Luke Milroy and Gareth Crawford.
The elusive Linton Jacobs chipped in with three goals and the versatile Josh Gitsham added three.
Storm half-forward Lachlan Sharp led the attack again by kicking four goals. Sharp has now kicked 36 goals for the season.
Strathfieldsaye's best were Michael Pilcher, Brodie Rogers, Cameron Wood, Brenton Hall and Sharp.
