The man appeared in the County Court this week for a plea hearing.
The court heard in April last year, the man and the victim were arguing in their unit.
A friend arrived at the property and knocked on the door, asking to come in. The victim told the friend they would be a minute.
The court heard after the knock on the door, the man became enraged.
He grabbed the woman by the neck and squeezed tightly. He screamed at her to "get out" and called her a "mongrel".
The court heard the man tried to shove the victim to the front door but she fell her hands and knees on the mattress.
The man continued to scream at the woman and witnesses heard her yell "leave me alone", "get off me" and "help".
The man's friend re-entered the apartment in an attempt to calm down the situation.
The court heard the offender became more enraged. He walked back towards the coffee table where he picked up a porcelain mug.
As he picked it up, he turned and in one motion, threw the mug at the woman with such force that it shattered on impact.
The woman, who was on her knees on the floor, told police she immediately felt pain, and was blinded in both eyes and lost her hearing.
The court heard the woman's sight in her right eye began to come back as soon as she went outside of the unit.
She began to scream for help as blood trickled down her face.
A number of surrounding residents came to her aid, including the offender's friend. The offender stayed inside the unit and did not render any assistance to the woman.
The court was told one witness heard what the prosecution believed was the man laughing after the incident.
The man left the scene on his motorbike before returning sometime later.
Paramedics arrived and took the woman to hospital. She was treated for a left eye globe rupture, a deep cut to the left side of her forehead, and a cut to her left eyelid.
A medical report found the woman would have permanent damage to her left eye and she was unlikely to regain much vision.
The offender was arrested and interviewed by police on the same day as the incident.
He told officers "he wasn't thinking" when he threw the cup and that he was aiming for the wall rather than the woman.
The man said he didn't realise the woman had been hit and that his friend had told him to leave.
The woman read out her victim impact statement to the County Court. She said the incident had left her feeling "powerless" and "scared for her life".
"For many months after the assault I had nightmares where I would wake up in a cold sweat, screaming," she said.
"I feel alone and depressed. I don't want to go out because of the scars on my face.
"I have to accept that I will lose sight in my left eye as I get older. I don't know when I will be able to drive again."
The man is due to return to the County Court later this month for a further plea hearing.
