The club's district commissioner Maree Campbell said members are concerned the farmers market was just the first part of Bendigo's much anticipated food hub plan coming to fruition.

"There are major concerns around what allowing another user group to share the grounds means for the future of our club," Ms Campbell said.

The Bendigo Pony Club's grounds at Breen Street and Belle Vue Road have been identified as council's preferred site for the hub.

City of Greater Bendigo Active and Healthy Lifestyles manager Lincoln Fitzgerald said council is in ongoing discussions with the pony club about the use of its grounds for a future food hub.

The Bendigo Community Farmers Market announced it had relocated to the Golden Square premises earlier this month.

Bendigo Pony Club is a tenant of the site and holds monthly rallies, which at this stage, don't coincide with the staging of the Bendigo Community Farmers Market.

Council said its focus has been to ensure the June farmers market can go ahead and that regular customers and stall holders can attend.

"There is currently no long-term arrangement in place for the market's use of the site," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"We will work with the farmers market to evaluate the success of this weekend's market and consider what long-term arrangements will be needed."

Council said a future Bendigo Community Food Hub would ideally include a farmers market.

"This decision is separate to the focus of moving the farmers market to the pony club to allow this weekend's market to go ahead," Mr Fitzgerald said.

The market was previously held at Sidney Myer Place.

To comply with social distancing requirements, the market sought an alternative location, with council commencing discussions with the pony club in late May about its relocation.

Ms Campbell said the club's committee is worried about the suitability of its grounds to host a farmers market.

"Our grounds are rough, uneven and have sink holes.

Mr Fitzgerald said the farmers market is experienced in setting up for markets to ensure stalls are easily accessible and the market is safe to move around.

"All OH&S requirements are the responsibility of the farmers market," he said.

"There will be a designated site for car parking, which will be on the flattest part of the area."

Council said it is committed to maximising the use of its public facilities.

"We will continue to discuss with both the farmers market and the pony club how their shared use of the site can be supported in the future," Mr Fitzgerald said.

Ms Campbell said the pony club is open to suggestions from council about moving to a new site, if the food hub is to be located on the club's premises.

"To relocate the pony club, there needs to be an incentive of better grounds and nothing suitable has been identified," Ms Campbell said.

Longlea's Peppercorn Park is a great facility, but is fully booked each weekend with current user groups, according to Ms Campbell.

"There is insufficient land to allow multiple groups to use it on the same day," she said.

Bendigo Pony Club has about 30 members.

The 2019/20 City of Greater Bendigo Budget said council proposed its capital works program to include to a detailed design of a Greater Bendigo Food Hub.

A food hub would intend to centralise the city's community-based charitable food sharing groups and deliver economic benefits.

Centralisation would allow groups to share resources, warehouse space, cool rooms and delivery logistics to maximise the reach of surplus food.

A 2015 feasibility study, costing the state government $30,000, said the hub would also include a farmers market.

Council endorsed the feasibility study in mid-2016 to find a home for a food hub, seek funding to build it and set up an organisation to run it.

In February 2018, council said lack of a suitable location forced it to shelve its food hub plan.

An agreement could not be reached with the owner of the former Crystal Industries site on Garsed Street, which was identified as the ideal location for the hub.

The farmers market is this Saturday, 9am to 1pm.
