In a "freakish coincidence" smoke was issuing from a firefighter's car, just as it had from a car fire in nearby Herriot Street about 30 minutes earlier.
The fires were completely unrelated, though both appeared to have been caused by wires in each engine, Heathcote lieutenant Bo Vejby said.
"One of our members was responding to the first fire and had driven his own car out there. He got back to the station and ... saw the smoke," he said.
"He yelled out to us 'my car is on fire!' We thought he was joking until we saw the smoke."
More news:
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with minimal damage to the car at about 12.45pm.
A member of the public was able to put out the fire at Herriot street a short time before firefighters arrived.
That car had minor damage, Mr Vejby said.
Firefighters are not treating either fire as suspicious.
