Gisborne's loss to Golden Square saw the powerful Gisborne side lose back-to-back games for the first time in seven years.

Meanwhile, Kangaroo Flat defeated Sandhurst for the first time in seven years.

After leading by as many as 18 points midway through the third term, Gisborne surrendered six of the last nine goals of the game to lose 15.9 (99) to 12.12 (84) to Golden Square at Wade Street.

The last quarter was a classic as Gisborne fought valiantly to hold off the surging Golden Square.

Golden Square kicked the first two goals of the last quarter through Nick and Christian Carter to lead by three points, before Gisborne coach Marcus Barham soccered a goal to put his side back in front.

Golden Square responded again with consecutive goals to Stacy Fiske and Darren Walsh to give it a nine-point lead with 13 minutes remaining. Marcus Barham again answered for Gisborne at the 19-minute mark with a setshot that wobbled through from 30 m out.

The Gisborne coach then had the chance to put the visitors back in front two minute later, but his 45 m set-shot hit the post. Down the other end, Christian Carter, who finished with five goals, sealed the win for Square when his quick kick out of a pack that looked headed for a point got a lucky bounce and rolled through for a goal at the 25-minute mark.

Matt Tyrrell earned best on ground honours after he kept Gisborne star Jordan Barham to a goal.

Simon Elsum and impressive youngster Casey Summerfield were best for Gisborne.

''The boys' one-on-one efforts were terrific and it just came from us trying to develop a really competitive unit,'' Golden Square coach Mark Adamson said.

''We want to be competitive and consistent whereby guys know what to expect from each other every week, and that we have 21 blokes on any given day who don't wait for someone else to stand up and do it, they do it themselves. We saw a bit of that today, which was fantastic.''

KANGAROO Flat kicked away from a spirited young Sandhurst side to defeat the Dragons for the first time since round 18, 2001.

The heat was on the Roos as the Dragons surged to a 15-point lead with a quarter to go.

However, the Roos slammed on 9.3 to a goal in the last term and celebrated a 15.11 (101) to 10.5 (65) victory.

Kangaroo Flat coach Darryl Wilson said the key was when the midfielders began to hit targets inside 50 m in the final term.

''We knew Sandhurst would be desperate and they really put us under a lot of pressure.

''There was not much zip or energy in our play in the first half, and we made a lot of mistakes.''

Tyrone Downie bagged five goals for the Roos, while Brendan Hehir and Danny Manning won plenty of the ball across half-back.

Sandhurst coach Keiran Nihill said although the loss was bitterly disappointing, there were a lot of positives to take from the contest.

''For three quarters we teamed really well, worked hard and set up a lot of attacks.

''In the last we just couldn't win enough of the ball, or made mistakes.''

Nihill said the play of Nick Stagg and Matt Thornton was a great sign for the future.

An 11-GOAL haul by Matt Gretgrix was the highlight of Eaglehawk's victory against Castlemaine at Canterbury Park.

The Hawks won the battle with the Magpies by 82 points as Gretgrix, midfielders Damien Lock, Shannon Milward, and young star Ryan Threlfall dominated play.

For most of the Eaglehawk players it was their first match in three weeks after a break for inter-league and a bye.

The Hawks also had a newlook defence as Tim Hill and Jayden Dole were on the sidelines.

Despite some concerns about the rest and the skill in the Castlemaine line-up, Eaglehawk won all but one quarter.

After an evenly-fought opening quarter, Eaglehawk slammed on 10.2 to 2.1 in the second quarter. By half-time the Two Blues led by 62 points.

Castlemaine fought back strongly and won the third term.

The Pies added 6.1 to 3.5 as Luke Walters, Leonard McNamara, David Taylor and teenager Dustin Martin led the way.

Eaglehawk finished with plenty of run as it added 7.5 in the final quarter.

Filo said he was impressed by the play of Dustin Martin for the Pies.

South Bendigo consolidated second position on the BFL ladder with a commanding 141-point thumping of Kyneton.

The winless Tigers were competitive against the in-form Bloods for the first half, but the second half was a different story.

The Tigers folded meekly as South kicked 19 goals to four to win 28.21 (189) to 7.6 (48).

''Kyneton's intensity was great early and their attack on the ball was impressive,'' South Bendigo coach Rick Coburn said.

''We were a bit flat after such a physical game the week before, but once we broke the game open we found it easier to score.

''Our second half was pretty good . . . when you win by 140 points you can't have too much to complain about.''

Midfielder Aaron Connaughton dominated for the Bloods with a couple of goals and more than 25 possessions.

Ruckman Brett Strange produced his best game of the season, while Josh McLeod, Marty Shadbolt and Brad Wright led a well-disciplined defence.

Kyneton coach Brett Cook spent most of the match at full-back on South Bendigo star Dayne Frew.

Frew bagged six goals to take his season tally to 41.

Skilful midfielder Brad Else was clearly Kyneton's best player.
