Environment Protection Authority Victoria regional manager Dr Scott Pigdon said many materials turned toxic when burned.
"Farm waste items like silage wrap, chemical containers and old tyres don't burn properly, but it will produce toxic smoke, and can send residue into waterways and create chemical contamination that persists in the soil," Dr Pigdon said
"Send it to landfill or a recycling facility."

The EPA can fine those who burn anything other than vegetation-sourced matter more than $8000.
Fallen tree and natural wood should be as dry as possible when burned, to reduce smoke.
Timber used in building, furniture or other manufactured products has likely been treated and should not be burned.

People can report suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC).
