Many Australians feel disconnected from family and are not involved in social events.
If it weren't for Lifeline, many may not speak to another person for days.
Humans are social creatures, we all have the need to connect, feel valued and belong.
People are increasingly geographically dispersed and many live in single person households.
For many, as they age, their social networks shrink.
Loneliness, however, does not discriminate.
It can effect anyone and many people feel lonely even when they are surrounded by others.
There are many reasons why people feel lonely.
They may feel a lack of commonality with others, fear rejection, have ill health or experience social anxiety.
Often, the impact of loneliness is minimised.
It is not seen as a real condition that has serious health consequences.
There is significant evidence, however, that chronic loneliness can result in severe physical and mental health presentations.
This may include; high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety, depression, poor sleep and poor diet.
We need to view connection as being as important as what we eat, how much we exercise and how we manage medical conditions.
Connection serves an important function in our emotional, physical and psychological wellbeing.
Just as we would plan our exercise and meals, we need to plan for social activity.
This includes having phone conversations, using technology to connect with others or joining a group.
Talk to your GP, counsellor or Lifeline or combat feelings of loneliness.
It is serious and we are here to help.
