Rupert Sherwood, who is the acting clinical services director of the women's and children's division at Western Health, will spend the next six weeks conducting the review with the help of an experienced midwife.
A draft report is expected by June 19.
Castlemaine Health suspended its maternity services on May 17 in order to review its policies, procedures and processes.
Dr Sherwood is currently seeking maternity services related documentation and will interview staff, GP obstetricians and other stakeholders for the main part of the review.
In the meantime, Castlemaine Health is working with Bendigo Health to ensure additional support in the coming months to help strengthen the maternity service.
The organisation, along with Safer Care Victoria and the Department of Health and Human Services, is committed to retaining a birthing service at Castlemaine Health.
Maternity services are currently scheduled to reopen on 1 July 2020 subject to the review's recommendations.
Castlemaine Health chief executive Ian Fisher said he hopes Dr Sherwood's expertise combined with Bendigo Heath's efforts will have maternity services re-opened prior to July 1.
"It may be possible to reopen maternity services earlier than the July 1 date tabled," he said.
"However, there are many factors to consider and it is too early for us to be definitive. We will be guided by the findings as the review progresses and will continue to do our utmost to reopen maternity services as soon as possible."
A petition calling for the re-opening of Castlemaine Health's maternity services was given to board members at their monthly meeting on Monday night.
Mr Fisher said thanked the community and Castlemaine's GP obstetricians for their support.
"While I'm unable to comment on the contents of the review, I'll continue to keep the community informed of our progress as we work towards a return to normal services," he said.
