With students at Assisi Kindergarten split between learning from home and face-to-face classes, teachers came up with the idea of a collaborative art project to keep the children working together.
Each student has received a heart shape, which they can colour in and decorate as they wish. The teachers at the centre will eventually combine all of the individual pieces to create one large heart.
"We were feeling separated and distanced from some of our families," education leader and teacher Ali Knowles said.
"We were also really aware that the children were losing other connections in their lives - their grandparents, their school communities, or broader connections.
"We really wanted to think of something that could keep us connected. We had a brainstorming session and came up with this group art project."
The hearts were sent out to families about three weeks ago and all of the 92 students jumped at the opportunity to participate.
"We've had an amazing response," nominated supervisor Kelly Walsh said. "The families have really embraced it and appreciated the attempt to stay connected.
"Also, getting something in the mail is very exciting for the kids."
Mrs Walsh said the COVID-19 pandemic had been challenging for the staff, students, and families.
"I think initially it was just a different way of looking at things," she said. "It was a bit overwhelming. But we have an amazing team who have really been able to shine in this time.
"We have been able to bring out the strengths in each other and worked collaboratively really well together. The family feedback has been very positive."
Mrs Walsh said this project was all about finding the light in dark times.
"I think it is good to look at the positives and there are a lot out there," she said. "We're lucky and safe, and we can stay connected."
