Ammar Najjar pleaded guilty to two charges of recklessly exposing an emergency worker to risk by driving, two charges of recklessly causing injury, failing to stop for police, failing to render assistance after an accident, driving while exceeding the prescribed concentration of drugs, two charges of driving while suspended, and two charges of committing an indictable offence on bail.

On the evening of July 6, 2018, two police officers went to check on Honda Civic on the Calder Highway at Kangaroo Flat, which had earlier been reported for erratic driving.

Najjar was standing at the back of the car, but ran for the driver's seat when he saw police.

One of the officers, believing the vehicle was stolen, ran to the car, opened the driver's door and reached across Najjar to put it in park to prevent it being driven away.

A struggle ensued, in which the officer was attacked by Najjar's co-offender Shari Oliver as he tried to keep the vehicle in park and wrest control of the steering wheel from Najjar.

During the struggle the car - with the officer inside - drifted across the highway's two southbound lanes and came to rest on the median strip.

The officer's colleague approached the vehicle and sprayed Najjar and Oliver with OC spray after they ignored her order to stop, but they continued to fight the first officer for control of the vehicle.

She then used her taser to stun Najjar and told him to get out of the car.

But the car lurched forward and struck a light pole, before quickly reversing back.

The open driver's side door hit the officer and threw her into a tree.

The car then crossed the two southbound lanes and drove up an embankment, hitting a tree.

The first officer was still hanging in the vehicle when Najjar reversed it back onto the highway.

The officer got him in a headlock, but Oliver took control of the steering wheel.

The officer had to throw himself from the moving vehicle and roll out of the way of oncoming traffic.

He sustained severe rib and back soreness, cuts and abrasions, while his colleague was left with a fractured wrist and other injuries.

Both police officers were hospitalised overnight.

Najjar and Oliver were arrested a short distance away.

Najjar tested positive to methamphetamine, his licence was suspended, and he was on bail at the time of the offending.

Earlier that day, Najjar had also failed to stop when police tried to pull him over on High Street in Bendigo, driving onto the wrong side of the road and turning onto Short Street against a red light.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

In April, Oliver was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment and a two-year community corrections order for her offending.
