The earthquake was recorded at 11.12pm yesterday. Geoscience Australia has received a single report that someone nearby felt it.
Senior duty seismologist Hugh Glanville said it was quite common that very few or no people would feel an earthquake when it was this small.
Lockington's earthquake was unrelated to recent earthquakes in other parts of the country, Mr Glanville said.
Aftershocks were not generally expected for an earthquake of its magnitude.
A total of 24 earthquakes have been recorded within 100 kilometres of Lockington in the past 10 years.
Yesterday's earthquake wasn't the largest recorded in the area, with a magnitude 3.3 earthquake recorded in 2018.
Two magnitude three earthquakes were recorded between Echuca and Bendigo in 2013, and one in 2010.
