IDAHOBIT or the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia, aims to raise awareness of and stimulate interest in LGBTIQ+ rights.
headspace Bendigo's HEY Diversity worker Maree Dixon says those in the central Victorian LGBTIQ+ community met online to celebrate the day.
"Due to COVID-19 and physical distancing, we had to do things a little bit differently this year," Ms Dixon said.
"Our diversity group celebrated online with conversation, laughs, rainbow flags and our unicorn named Cina."
Mount Alexander council commemorated the day by raising a rainbow flag at Castlemaine's historic Market Building.
The council's director of corporate and community services Lisa Knight said the day is one when people across the world stand against discrimination.
"Flying the Rainbow Flag in Castlemaine yesterday shows our commitment to social inclusion in the shire," Ms Knight said.
"It is also an outcome of our continuing work with the LGBTIQ+ Round Table.
"That work allows us to ensure LGBTIQ+ people in Mount Alexander can enjoy the full respect and equality guaranteed through the Victorian Human Rights Charter."
The staging of the second Bendigo Pride Festival was cancelled in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The festival, scheduled to take place across three weekends in March, was to include a walking tour of the Goldfields and queer theatre.
The successful Bendigo Queer Film Festival and Queer Country Art Exhibition were also slated to be part of the festival's schedule.
Festival director John Richards said there remained a possibility of holding a smaller, pop-up festival on a weekend later in the year.
"At the moment, planning ahead is difficult," Mr Richards said.
