Volunteering in the disability sector can be very rewarding, enjoyable and diverse from program to program.
At Interchange Loddon-Mallee Region, they run a variety of group programs and camps each year and they are certainly enhanced with the many friendly volunteers that choose to support the Community Facilitators and participants on the programs.
Dee Lynch has been volunteering with Interchange LMR for over six years and has attended many sessions on the Adult and Youth Social Group which runs on Friday evenings and weekends.
"Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose and makes me feel valued to the participants. This in turn, makes me feel happy and increases my self-confidence by being an important part of the Interchange LMR team," Dee Lynch said.
"You are there to assist the staff and participants, so compared to working, you are able to enjoy the social outings whilst supporting the participants. I have made great friends with other volunteers and staff during my time with Interchange LMR.
"I work fulltime and have a young family, so I don't have a lot of spare time. But thankfully, Interchange LMR have programs that run after business hours as well, which has allowed me to continue to volunteer my time when I can.
"I would highly recommend volunteering with Interchange as you are treated like a valuable member of the team. All the participants and staff are friendly and easy going. There is no obligation to volunteer every weekend. You may only wish to volunteer once a month or once every few months, depending on your other commitments.
"I enjoy being involved with people living with disability, but I don't have qualifications to work in the disability sector.
"So, for me, the next best thing is to be a volunteer for Interchange LMR as this allows me to still be actively involved in the disability sector. Interchange have such a variety of programs to be involved with, that each volunteer shift is both interesting and fun."
