Tribe, who are part of Bendigo Theatre Company, held a livestream information night for performers interested in taking part and are asking cast hopefuls to record their auditions and send them in.
Production manager Kristen Beever said the show could be a positive for people in hte current climate.
"We feel like we're trying to offer something positive in this depressing time," she said. "The power of having a project to work on and be part of something is important.
"We are feeling really lucky that we have not had the show shut down.
"What's exciting about Cats is that Tribe is for secondary school-aged kids but we have roles for below that age and pit singers who could be above it."
Mrs Beever said the production team had discussed a number of contingencies for the show. A final decision on whether it will take place will happen on July 12.
"(For now) we have to focus on what we know," she said. "The decision to postpone might be taken out of hands (but) if it is none of the work will be wasted - we have discovered how to do audition virtually, can hold information nights online and can treat everything as a learning experience.
"The $24 million question is will people come to see it? That's not something have an answer to. People might not want to sit shoulder to shoulder in a theatre.
"We have to be careful and responsible about whatever decision we decide to go for."
