Hume and Iser Mitre 10 managing director Stephen Iser said the Bendigo store had been extremely busy since March.
"It's a bit like spring and Christmas trading has been going on since mid-March," he said.
"(People have) been doing a mixture of absolutely everything. The initial burst was for things like face masks, toilet rolls and methylated spirits to use for hand sanitiser, which we also sell."
Mr Iser said after the initial rush on safety equipment, people turned to painting and garden maintenance.
"Probably the biggest department is the paint department. Thousands of litres of paint have been selling," he said.
"People are home and have got time. Where they usually might get a painter or handy person to do it, they are doing it.
"Seedlings come and go in the garden department with everyone doing vegie gardens and stuff like that."
Mr Iser said being so busy was a good problem to have.
"It's a magnificent problem to have. No one in their wildest dreams would have anticipated this," he said.
"We're luckily allowed to stay open but the fact is we have got about half of Bendigo in lockdown and looking for something to do.
"Our garden department is struggling to keep up with demand. People are improving their indoor and outdoor gardens and general hardware lines in timber and sheeting are doing well.
"Power tools and hand tools have been huge sellers and our trade customers are busy too."
Like many other business, Hume and Iser introduced changes to cope with social distancing and other restrictions.
"We restricted the registers, put up screens for the operators and tables in front of counters to distance people," Mr Iser said.
