UNDEFEATED through more than half the season to missing the finals - that was the tale of Maiden Gully's 2019-20 in the Emu Valley Cricket Association.
The fast-starting Lions laid a solid platform pre-Christmas from which to build on.
At the mid-season break the Lions sat in second position with six wins (including over eventual premier United) and a draw from their seven games and a cushy 28-point buffer inside the top four.
Yet the mid-season break halted the Lions' momentum as they could muster just two wins from their six games after the resumption and slipped to fifth for the second year in a row, ultimately missing a spot in the finals by just two points.
Alex Gorrie was one of just three EVCA players - along with Spring Gully's Rhys Webb and Emu Creek's Luke Bennett - to make multiple centuries, compiling a pair of 100 not out scores against California Gully in round five and West Bendigo in round 13.
The Lions' other century-maker for the season was veteran Matt Felini (105 n.o. v West Bendigo), with he and Gorrie combining for 912 runs in total - Felini with 467 and Gorrie 445.
Felini belted five scores above 50 from his 10 innings, with four of them at a strike-rate of at least 100 - his unbeaten 105 against West Bendigo came off just 77 balls with 21 boundaries in round nine.
As well as his 445 runs, Gorrie topped the Lions' MVP points with 800 after also capturing 14 wickets and claiming seven fielding dismissals.
The Lions' standout with the ball was Brett Haw, who picked up 25 wickets - 10 more than any other Maiden Gully player.
