The new legislation agreed to by parliamentarians will help with the delivery of important financial support for more than 730,000 businesses that have signed up.
Even more importantly, it will help alleviate financial stress and uncertainty for millions of Australian workers who have lost work since the COVID-19 pandemic descended upon our nation.
The finance sector was quick to show its support for the raft of measures agreed to by MPs, with CPA Australia spokesperson Paul Drum calling it a moment that will go down in history as one of the most important suites of legislation and associated instruments for the benefit of businesses, workers, their families, and the economic security of the nation.
It's hard to argue with these sentiments.
The CPA says the legislation introduces wide ranging powers for the Treasurer and the Tax Commissioner, and we hope the responsibility that falls with this is never taken for granted.
There are billions of taxpayer dollars set to be distributed to workers via their employers in coming weeks. Accountability and accuracy has never been more important.
Australians also need to know that no legislation is perfect and all-inclusive and there will still be many who feel left out.
No one should be left behind.
It's the government's responsibility to continue to work to support more Australians through a crisis they carry no responsibility for.
Credit must be given to all politicians who have worked together to get these arrangements in place so quickly.
It's a pity this sort of cooperation does not happen more often, and the fact it has taken an event the size and scale of the COVID-10 pandemic to procure this bipartisanship is a tragedy in itself.
It's one thing for leaders to agree on how we get through the current challenge, but managing how we eventually fund our way out of it will be equally difficult.
