However, before the European Tour player was competing on the international scene, there were countless rounds played on the courses of his home district.

The Bendigo Advertiser caught up with Herbert to discuss his favourites.

"There are so many different reasons why each of these holes are good," Herbert said.

"There are so many around Bendigo which I have such fond memories of whether it be playing there as a junior, amateur or a pennant event.

"They all bring back such great memories."

There's nothing Herbert loves more than starting a round with a solid short iron shot, that's why we are going to kick it all off with the first at Axedale.

Visually the hole looks quite straight forward, but be careful of the bunkers which guard the green to the left and right.

"Its a very good opening hole, probably the best opening hole in the district."

Herbert loves a short, but testing par 3, that's why the third at Neangar Park has made the cut.

Standing on the tee it all looks quite straight forward, but hidden out of sight, there is water in play, in addition to a challenging chip shot if you hit it right.

Let's not forget the three-tier green which can make for a challenging putt.

"Now that the tee has been brought forward it's a great hole. From tee to the green there's a lot in play that makes it really interesting for a short hole."

The hole boasts a small green which requires accuracy, otherwise it could be a very tough up and down from the back.

"The green slopes severely off the back. If you misjudge your tee shot or hit it over the back of the green, you're in trouble."

Who doesn't love standing on the tee and hitting a monster drive onto the green on a short par 4.

"This is a great risk-reward hole as it is penalising if you don't get it right going for the green.

"But it can also be played very simply as you can just lay it up and chip it onto the green."

"It can be played two ways. It's not overly difficult, but it can become challenging if you take too much on."

Known to be one of the most difficult on the course, the tee requires an accurate tee shot to leave a straight forward second shot to the green.

"It's a good strong par 4 and used to be even more challenging when there was a tree on the left hand-side of the green.

"It's still a tough hole as I need to hit a driver followed by a full wedge to make it there in two."

Standing on the tee, the green is no where in sight. If you hit it dead straight, slice it or hook it, you're likely to find trouble.

"If you're short of the tee it helps to keep the ball in play. You need to aim just left of the trees on the right to hit the relatively wide fairway.

"If your tee shot goes too far right into the trees, the ball can be flicked anywhere, hit it too far left and the second shot can become quite awkward.

"There is then a long second shot to the green and every thing feeds right to left of the green."

A short par 4 where a birdie can be secured with a straight drive and a nice chip.

However, accuracy is key. Depending on where the flag is, it can be a challenging putt.

"There's enough trouble if you hit it right or on the left there are also some tricky spots."

One of the longest holes on the course boasts an out-of-bounds area, a creek and a bunker. Plenty to make it a challenge.

"This is a good strong hole. It's long and requires two solid accurate shots to make it there in two."

Long drive required to make it over the hill, hit it short and what looked like the perfect ball off the tee, could stop still when it hits the fairway's slope, or even worse, left into the fairway bunker.

"After you make it over the hill, the second shot can be quite tricky because you can get there in two if you hit a nice second shot.

"Miss it left and it leaves a tough chip shot, miss it right and there are all sorts of trouble. Also the green can leave a difficult putt."

Who doesn't love to finish a round in style, that's why the final hole at Bendigo has made the list.

"What a great hole to finish on, there's not anything necessarily hard about it and you can make it to the green in two if you have enough club.

"It's next to the clubhouse and if you're playing a club championship or a tournament, you could be three in front going down the last, but you still need to make some good shots."
