The roads surrounding the weighbridge and drop-off points are now paved with a Boral asphalt product that used 586,000 recycled plastic bottles, 303,000 recycled glass bottles and 66.5 tonne of recycled asphalt.
City of Greater Bendigo presentation and assets director Debbie Wood said this type of sustainable asphalt has only been used in two other projects in Perth and Newcastle.
"When the opportunity to use this type of asphalt in this project we thought it was a good way to demonstrate a project using recycled materials," Ms Wood said.
"It's creating a lot of interest from other local governments, business and organisations throughout Australia who are keen to use recycled material in their projects.
"While the landfill itself only has a limited life span the facility will continue to operate as a transfer station into the future and this project is about preparing for that transition."
