Vice-chancellor and university president, Professor John Dewar said only subjects with an essential face-to-face component would be delivered on campus.

"And in those cases the social distancing guidelines will be followed," Professor Dewar said.

He outlined new supports in a message to students, including a COVID-19 Financial Assistance Program, waiving the first semester Student Services and Amenities Fee, and giving students more time to make changes to their enrolments.

Professor Dewar also urged people to practice social distancing and respectful behaviour.

"Sadly, there is evidence that some members of the wider community have been displaying unacceptable behaviour towards our Asian community," he said.

"I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that La Trobe is an inclusive, welcoming and diverse community. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind."

He encouraged students to make use of the services available to assist them, including the university's student wellbeing support service.

"La Trobe University is doing everything it can to ensure that your education can continue during a very difficult period for everyone, and that you are as fully supported as possible," Professor Dewar said.

He said moving most of the university's subjects to a new online delivery mode in just a few weeks had been a huge task.

Teaching activities were suspended while subjects transitioned.

Professor Dewar appealed for patience, tolerance and support for staff and fellow students in the event of technical difficulties.
