Monfries put in a clearance this week to leave Castlemaine for the Magpies of the Central Murray league.
The 33-year-old was Castlemaine's leading goalkicker in his first season with the club in 2019.
He was appointed Castlemaine coach for 2020 in early October last year, but six weeks later stepped down from the position.
Castlemaine had hoped to retain his services as a player, but that never seemed likely.
Monfries heads to Lake Boga to align with his Castlemaine allies Filo and Mitch Hough, who have signed a two-year deal to co-coach the club.
"We're pretty happy to have Angus on board.
"We're all in the unknown at the moment with what's going on (with coronavirus), but signing Angus is a good signing for the club.
"Angus will be part of our coaching process. he has great leadership quality and he'll give great advice to our younger players.
"Even from just a club culture point of view he ticks all the boxes."
Monfries spent 13 years in the AFL system at Essendon (150 games, 165 goals) and Port Adelaide (61 games, 83 goals).
The Central Murray FL season was scheduled to start on April 18, but has been delayed until at least May 31 because of coronavirus concerns.
