After discussions with clubs, referees and based on the current Football Federation Australia advice, the season will start no sooner than May 16.
"Whilst delaying the competition is regrettable, as a responsible community organisation we acknowledge we have a role to play in limiting the spread of the virus both due to the sizable region our competition takes part in and the over 3000 players, coaches, officials, and their families we support," BASL president Aaron Shooter said.
"I would like to acknowledge the collaboration, expediency and commitment of our member clubs, Referees Association, BASL committee and operations department, to arrive at the decision at such short notice.
"I wish the very best of health for all our members, their families and the broader community during this challenging time and look forward to when we can safely return to the field to share in the game we love."
BASL will make future decisions based on advice from the FFA, which yesterday announced all sanctioned community football and associated training to be suspended until mid-April.
BASL's decision to extend the delay to mid-May was made to give clubs and administrators time to prepare for the season after activities recommence.
