They have put the health of central Victorians first in a bid to slow down the spread of the virus.
Together we all say thank you.
Our health system is one of the best in the world but it faces great challenges.
One of those challenges is obtaining more personal protective equipment for health workers, virus test packs, extra respirators and masks.
We need to recognise that while Australian states and territories are looking to bolster supplies, so too are other governments around the world.
Bendigo's greatest challenge slowing the spread of the disease and keeping the most vulnerable out of the way.
There have been many travellers from Italy, the United States and elsewhere entering the country in the last fortnight, some who carry the disease unbeknown to them.
We must work on the basis that there are a number of infected people in Bendigo.
Experience in other countries tells us the elderly and also those with pre-existing health conditions are at the most risk of very serious illness and death.
They are the people who will need the most medical help if they become ill.
These people need to urgently self-isolate.
If they haven't started they should do so now.
Not tomorrow or next week.
We need to check the elderly in our families are limiting their contact with others.
We all need to engage in social distancing to limit transmission.
Waiting until there are a few confirmed cases in our community is waiting too late.
Let's act now to help protect each other.
Bob Cameron, chairman, Bendigo Health
