Vice-captain Tara Slender kicked the Pioneers' only goal of the game during the second quarter in their 7.10 (52) to 1.2 (8) defeat at Highgate Recreation Reserve.
However, coach Cherie O'Neill was pleased with the way her side fought the game out after they had trailed by 29 points at half-time.
"We were slow to start in the first half and didn't have enough accountability and allowed them too much space," O'Neill said.
"They made us pay early, but in the second half the girls turned it around and were able to shut the game down, which was pleasing to see."
The best players for the Pioneers were led by co-captain Annabel Strahan, Jemma Finning, Lily den Houting and Scarlett Orritt.
The Pioneers will continue their season at Epsom-Huntly next Saturday against the Calder Cannons from 1pm.
The Cannons are also 0-2 after the opening two rounds.
"We'll keep working away at the fundamentals at training this week and look forward to having another crack against Calder next Saturday," O'Neill said.
