The Bendigo couple took over Powney's Newsagency a week before Christmas and admit it's been a big change after running the Condon Street Takeaway.
The couple, who have three daughters, twins Taylor and Tahlia, 6 and Tanisha, 8, bought the business from Alan Powney who operated it for 36 years.
Mr Tzouroutis, who can remember the building set on two levels, said support from customers and staff has made the changeover easier.
"I can remember coming here as a kid and looking through the toys," he said.
"The amount of encouragement from the staff and customers has been amazing."Mrs Tzouroutis welcomed a program announced yesterday by the State Government and Victorian Authorised Newsagents Association to support newsagencies across the state.
As part of the program that starts in April, proprietors can apply for training and mentoring courses led by independent business experts.
"Extra training in computers would be helpful; to know how to run the overall system more efficiently for our business," she said.
The couple has completed training to be accredited Tattersalls dealers and plans to expand a number of lines to make the store more family friendly.
Mr Tzouroutis is looking forward to meeting the challenges of running a new business and is enjoying working six days a week.
