Duck season support
Why is this an ongoing issue? I'm sick of people saying that the majority of Victorians don't agree with duck shooting.
This sport/hunting of ducks should have nothing to do with the numbers of people who think it shouldn't be happening.
Who gives anyone the right to say these hunters can't do what is and always has been a legitimate legal activity!
It is a natural way of REAL WORLD life! Animals kill and eat other animals.
How can the overpowering numbers control what people can and can't do in rural populated areas where these activities take place.
People need to stop trying to control others and telling them what they can and can't do and go on about your own lives.
Andrew Boyle, Warburton
Duck season regrets
I am sickened to think the government has given into these people.
Those poor birds.
Every intelligent person can see there is drought and loss of habitat for these animals.
More killing putting them on a downward spiral... For the entertainment of few.
Linda Greer, Diamond Creek
SAFETY FOR CYCLISTS
In Victoria we have a progressive state government, so it's hard to understand why it is so reluctant to introduce further safety measures to protect cyclists.
Maybe Ministers in their chauffer-driven vehicles are oblivious to the dangers facing cyclists.
Almost all other states have passed laws requiring motorists to keep a safe distance from cyclists when passing, 1 metre and 1.5 metres for speeds over 60 kmh.
Transport for New South Wales conducted a two year trial of the rule and estimated a 15 per cent reduction in casualty crashes. Surveys showed that 81 per cent of riders and 69 per cent of drivers supported the rule.
Cycling on our roads is dangerous. Shouldn't we be supporting measures to make it safer.
We now have new technology to pick up more motorists texting or using hand held phones whilst driving, but again the state government is reluctant to act - why? NSW has already legislated.
It's time to act now, rather than wait to the end of the year. More lives will be lost and riders seriously injured in the interim with a survey showing 31 per cent of drivers aged 18 to 25 are likely to read a text while driving and 20 per cent are likely to write one.
