WORKSAFE is investigating the death of a 49-year-old train pilot who died after a Sydney to Melbourne train derailed on Thursday night.

A 49-year-old man from Castlemaine and a 54-year-old man from the ACT both died in the crash.
It's believed the Castlemaine man boarded the NSW operated service at Kilmore East to escort the train through a section of track where automated signalling was not in operation.
