The 24-year-old tees off Thursday on Queenstown's Millbrook course.
"It's quite long and open. It's a course that tests your all-round game as a golfer," Herbert said.
"A lot of the guys that have played well here in the past have been solid ball strikers.
"That has been a big focus heading into this week, making sure my irons are dialled in."
Herbert arrived in New Zealand fresh off his WGC debut in Mexico at the Club de Golf Chapultepec.
"With how tree-lined the course was last week, any course is gong to feel open," he said.
"I am looking forward to not being worried about blocking tee shots a couple yards off the fairways and hitting trees."
Overall, he looks forward to the week ahead in New Zealand.
"I love Queenstown. I've got a good crew here with me and my main thing is to just have some fun, hopefully the golf is good too," he laughed.
Herbert will tee up in round one alongside PGA Tour of Australasia Q-School winner Luke Toomey (NZ) in round one at 1.17pm off the first tee.
In terms of his expectations for a top-finish this week, they will emerge closer to tee-off.
"It's always hard to tell. It depends on how I sleep the night before and how I am hitting them on the range, that's where my expectations will come from," he said.
A challenge has been five weeks on the road at tournaments throughout the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
However, he is managing the challenge of life on the road better than ever before.
"This year I've dealt with fatigue better than I ever have and haven't felt tired coming down the home stretch at tournaments," Herbert said.
"But I am definitely looking forward to a break after this week in New Zealand.
"I was due to play in Malaysia and China, but they have both been postponed, so I am not sure when exactly I will play next.
"With a good start to the year, it has taken a lot of pressure off and I am not worried about trying to get in front at smaller events."
Fellow Bendigo golfer Andrew Martin is also in the mix at the NZ Open.
Martin will play with South Korean teenage golfing sensation Joohyung Kim at 8.03am off the first tee on the Millbrook Course.
He is fresh off competing in the Asia Tour's Q-School last week in Thailand.
Martin is confident ahead of round one.
"There's not much threat off the tee. They are a lot more open than most courses," he said.
"Even the slopes and hills are generous, it comes down to landing in good positions off the tee, which is always the number one goal."
Other notable players in the field include two-time NZ Open winner Michael Hendry (NZ) and defending champion Zach Murray (AUS).
The NZ Open is played across two courses, the Millbrook Resort and The Hills, with all players alternating courses for the second round.
After the weekend cut, the final two rounds will be played on the Millbrook course.
