Owner Crystal O'Toole met with Rolo's vet on Tuesday and was told her seven-year-old companion would need specialist surgery to insert plates into his leg, at an estimated cost of $5000.
Rolo will then need several weeks of downtime as he recovers.
But Ms O'Toole said Rolo was a "goer" and his vet believed his nature would aid his recovery.
Ms O'Toole discovered Rolo injured when she returned to her Kangaroo Flat home last Friday.
Power tools belonging to her partner were missing from the backyard, leading them to believe Rolo had been injured by the thief.
Investigations into the incident continue.
A crowdfunding effort to contribute to Rolo's vet bills has been established, raising almost $2500 at the time of writing.
Ms O'Toole thanked everyone who had donated, saying that without their help she would not have been able to afford surgery.
She said she expected Rolo's vet bills to exceed $6000 in total.
Greencross Vets Kangaroo Flat is also accepting donations to help cover the cost of treatment.
